Preventive Medicine Q & A

What is preventive care?

Preventive care is designed to identify potential warning signs of disease as early as possible, often through exams and screening tests. Based on the results of those evaluations, Dr. Shafipour works with you to develop a comprehensive plan of care aimed at preventing disease and maintaining optimal health.

What types of services are included in preventive care?

A physical exam is at the heart of Dr. Shafipour’s preventive care program. Preventive physical exams include:

  • Evaluation of height, weight, blood pressure, and other vital signs
  • Checking ears, eyes, and throat
  • Listening to your lungs and heart
  • Lab work for metabolic functioning, blood sugar levels, cholesterol, and other factors
  • Other services deemed necessary to your health

Depending on the reason for your visit, it might also include an EKG, body fat measurement, and other services deemed necessary for your health.

Once these screening and diagnostic tests and evaluations are performed, Dr. Shafipour uses the results to determine a plan of action to make sure you have the best health you possibly can.

Beyond regular physical exams, Dr. Shafipour provides some preventive services with each visit, regardless of the cause, to monitor your health. Such services include a check of your vital signs like blood pressure, weight and height measurements, and body mass index measurement.

How often should I have a preventive exam?

Having an annual preventive exam, especially if you're 35 or older or if you have a personal or family history of specific diseases, is a good idea. Insurance companies provide a certain number of preventive visits free of charge. Contact your insurance company to find out about coverage limits to make sure you make the most of your plan benefits.
